GE date code lookup: find the age from the serial number

Type a GE serial number and the tool reads the GE date code to estimate the manufacture date. GE’s date letters repeat every 12 years, so read the “may be from” line before you trust the first year.

GE appliance serial number lookup: decode yours

This GE serial number lookup reads two codes. Choose GE Appliances for the rating plate on a refrigerator, range, dishwasher, washer or dryer. Choose GE (water heaters) for a tank water heater. The answer is an estimate of when the unit was built, not a record.

Where to look

Where to find the serial number on a GE appliance

The serial number is on the rating plate, usually inside the door frame or on the back of the appliance. To read the GE date code, you need that serial line, not the model number. The two sit near each other on the plate, and mixing them up is the most common reason a decoder says it can’t read a code.

On a tank water heater the plate is on the side of the tank, and the serial often starts with letters such as GE.

Photograph the plate before you leave the unit. A clear photo lets you decode the serial back at your desk, and it settles any argument later about what was installed. If the plate prints a manufacture date, use that date and ignore the decoder. A printed date always beats a decoded one.

The format

The GE date code: how the appliance serial number is built

A GE appliance serial starts with two letters, followed by digits (usually six digits and a letter or digit). The first letter is the month. The second letter is the year. The table shows each letter and the year it means in the 2000s.

LetterAs the first letter (month)As the second letter (year, 2000s)
AJanuary2001
DFebruary2002
FMarch2003
GApril2004
HMay2005
LJune2006
MJuly2007
RAugust2008
SSeptember2009
TOctober2010
VNovember2011
ZDecember2000

The year letters run in a 12-letter cycle, so each letter returns every 12 years: Z is also 2012, A is also 2013, and so on back into the 1970s. The code is documented by third-party parts sites. We could not read GE’s own chart.

Worked examples

Two GE serials, read step by step

AS123456S. The first letter A means January. The second letter S can mean 2009, and it also means 1997 and 2021. The parts site that documents this serial reads it as January 2009. The tool shows the most recent year that has already happened, so its headline is January 2021, and the “may be from” line lists 2009 and 1997.

LT221102. L means June. T can mean 1986, 1998, 2010 or 2022. The source that documents this serial reads it as June 1986 or 1998. The tool headlines June 2022 and lists 2010 and 1998 below it.

The pattern to remember: on GE, the tool’s first answer is the newest possible year. For a unit that has been in a building for 15 or 20 years, the correct year is almost always in the “may be from” line.

Picking the right year

How to choose between the years a GE serial could mean

Use evidence you already have. The year the building was finished rules out any candidate before that date. Invendoory stores a year built for each building, so a refrigerator in a 2014 building cannot be from 2002.

The appliance’s style and finish help too: a refrigerator with a touchscreen is not from the same decade as one with analog dials. The owner’s manual, the purchase invoice and the work order that installed the unit all narrow it further.

When two candidates are 12 years apart and you still can’t choose, plan with the older one. Planning with the older year means you budget early. Assuming the newer year is how a 17-year-old refrigerator fails in the middle of a turn.

What the tool can't read

What the GE rule can't tell you

These gaps are real. Where the tool can’t date a serial, it says so instead of guessing.

The 12-year letter cycle

Every year letter repeats. The tool lists up to two older candidates under its headline year. If the unit might be older than that, check the plate for a printed date.

Pre-1970s units

Appliances from before the 1970s use another system. The tool does not read it, and neither does the chart above.

Dates that haven't happened

A code that would mean a future month is rejected, and the tool says it can’t date the serial. For example, a code that means December 2026 is rejected until that month arrives.

GE heat pump water heaters

The GE water heater rule covers tank units from the Rheem era, which use a month-and-year code after a letter prefix. Newer GE heat pump models may use the two-letter appliance code, and we have not verified that. Check the plate.

Same code, other names

GE Profile, Café and Monogram, and GE water heaters

One rule covers several lines. Pick the right brand in the tool, because the two GE rules are not interchangeable. GE water heater age follows the Rheem-style month and year, while the appliance rule uses two letters.

GE Profile, Café and Monogram

These lines share the GE appliance code, so the month and year letters above apply to them as well. Use the GE Appliances brand in the tool.

GE-branded tank water heaters

GE tank water heaters have been built by Rheem, and they follow a Rheem-style month-and-year code. Example: PC 0806203893 is August 2006, and GE 0599 154948 is May 1999. See the Rheem and Ruud page for the same layout.

Typical life

For operators

Why a 12-year error matters on a GE appliance

Equipment age drives two decisions in a multifamily property: what to replace next year, and what to charge a resident at move-out.

For replacement planning, a refrigerator you believe is five years old gets no budget line. If it is really 17, it is the surprise in the middle of a turn. Record every serial in the asset inventory with a photo of the plate, and the life-used bar and Repair, Monitor or Replace guidance work from a date you can defend.

For move-out proration, the Prorate Calculator takes age, lifespan and condition. A 12-year swing can change a charge from most of an item’s value to none of it. The decoded date is an estimate, so verify it before it goes on a resident’s ledger. State law and your lease govern what you can charge.

GE serial number questions

How do I find GE appliance age by serial number?

To get GE appliance age by serial number, read the first two letters. The first letter is the month and the second is the year, using GE’s 12-letter cycle. Enter the serial in the tool above and read the “may be from” line, because each year letter repeats every 12 years. The result is an estimate.

Why does the tool show more than one possible year?

GE reuses each year letter every 12 years, so one serial fits several years. The tool shows the newest year that has already passed, then lists up to two older ones. Choose using the building’s year built, the appliance’s style and any paperwork.

How do I find GE water heater age?

Pick the GE (water heaters) brand and enter the serial from the rating plate on the side of the tank. For tank units from the Rheem era, the date is a month and a two-digit year after the letter prefix. Newer GE heat pump models may use a different code, and the tool will say it can’t date them.

Can I trust the date for a resident charge?

Treat it as a starting point. The decoder is built from third-party charts, not GE’s own. The rating plate and GE are the authority. If a charge depends on the date, confirm it with the plate or the manufacturer first.

What if the tool says it can't date my serial?

Check that you copied the serial, not the model number, including every letter. If it still fails, the unit may predate the 1970s system, use a newer format, or be a different brand. Look for a printed manufacture date on the plate.
