InSinkErator serial number: find a disposal's age

On InSinkErator disposers made before summer 2024, the first four digits of the serial give the year and month. The newer 10-character format is not read, and this page explains why.

Check an InSinkErator serial number

Enter the serial from the gray tag on the disposer. If it starts with digits, the tool reads the year and month. If it starts with letters, it is the new format and the tool will say it can’t date it.

The tool compares the disposer’s age to a planning figure of 10 years. NAHB and InterNACHI publish 12 years, so a result may show a little more life used than a 12-year view.

Where to look

Where to find the InSinkErator serial number

The serial number is on the gray tag near the bottom of the disposer. It sits under the sink, so you need a light and room to tilt your head. A phone photo of the tag saves a second trip. Wipe the tag before you read it.

Do not confuse the serial with the model number. Both are printed on the tag. The model number names the product line. The serial number is the string whose first four digits hold the date.

Disposers are small items, so they are often left out of an inventory. That is also why their age is rarely known.

The format

How the InSinkErator serial number works

InSinkErator states the date rule on its own warranty page. The first two digits are the year and the next two are the month. Its official example reads 15 as 2015 and 03 as March.

DigitsWhat they meanExample: 1503000001
1 and 2Year15 = 2015
3 and 4Month03 = March
The restSequence number, not part of the date000001

InSinkErator documents only the first four digits. The remaining digits in the example are made up for illustration, and the manufacturer page does not state the full serial length or which model years the rule covers.

Worked example

Reading 1503000001, step by step

Take the serial 1503000001. The first two digits, 15, mean 2015. The next two, 03, mean March. The tool reports March 2015.

In October 2026 that disposer is about 11 and a half years old. NAHB and InterNACHI both publish 12 years for a food waste disposer, so it is close to the end of the published range. By the tool’s own 10-year planning figure, it is already past typical life.

Two more serials the tool reads, both built from the documented four-digit rule: 1811004321 is November 2018, and 0907123456 is July 2009. A serial with an impossible month, such as 1513 followed by digits, will not decode, because 13 is not a month.

The result is a manufacture date. Install usually comes a few months later.

What it can't read

The 2024 alphanumeric format the tool doesn't read

InSinkErator announced a new 10-character serial that mixes numbers and letters, starting in summer 2024. An example from the manufacturer’s page is IHD2101201. The page does not say how the new format encodes the date, so the tool does not guess. If your serial starts with letters, the tool answers “can’t date”.

This is the gap that will grow. Every disposer built since summer 2024 may carry the new format. For those units, the best date is the one you wrote down: the install date from the work order or the turn sheet. Record it in the item, and the age is known from day one.

Two smaller limits. Very old disposers may differ from the four-digit rule, because the manufacturer page does not say how far back it applies. And one website claims an older letter-based scheme, but we found no source for it, so we ignored it.

Typical life

How long an InSinkErator disposal lasts

InSinkErator does not publish a number of years. Two references agree on one figure, and a multifamily table adds a harder-use case.

For operators

Why a small item belongs in the inventory

Disposers rarely make the budget, but they come up at every move-out. When a resident is charged for a failed disposal, the first question is how old it was. A tag photo and a decoded date answer it.

Add the disposer to the unit in the asset inventory with its make, model, serial and the photo of the tag. Disposal horsepower is a recorded field, so the record is complete. The item gets a life-used bar like any other.

The Prorate Calculator uses age, lifespan and condition for the charge, and a disposer that is mid-life is prorated differently from one that is past it. State law and your lease govern what you can bill. Keep the date and the photo so the number holds up if it is questioned.

InSinkErator serial number questions

How do I tell the age of an InSinkErator from the serial number?

Find the serial on the gray tag near the bottom of the disposer. If it starts with digits, the first two are the year and the next two are the month. Enter it above for a date estimate. If it starts with letters, see the new format below.

What is the new InSinkErator serial format?

Starting in summer 2024, InSinkErator uses a 10-character serial of numbers and letters, such as IHD2101201. Its page doesn’t say how the date is encoded, so the tool doesn’t read it. Use your install date or ask the manufacturer.

Why does the tool say it can't date my serial?

Either the serial uses the 2024 format, you copied the model number, or the first four digits don’t form a valid month. Re-read the tag. Digits that don’t make sense usually mean the wrong line.

How long does an InSinkErator disposal last?

NAHB and InterNACHI both publish 12 years for a food waste disposer. Fannie Mae’s multifamily table uses 5 years for common-area disposals. InSinkErator gives no number of years, so plan with your own replacement history.

Is the date the install date?

No. It is an estimate of when the unit was built. Install is usually a few months later. The manufacturer or the tag is the authority, so confirm it before a date supports a resident charge.
