Appliance Age Finder: Amana

Amana serial number lookup: two companies, two codes

Amana heating and cooling is built by Goodman. Amana refrigerators, ranges and washers are built by Whirlpool. Their serial numbers follow different rules, so pick the right one before you decode.

Amana serial number lookup: decode yours

Choose Amana (HVAC) for a furnace, air handler, heat pump or air conditioner. Choose Whirlpool / Maytag / KitchenAid / Amana (appliances) for a refrigerator, range, dishwasher, washer or dryer. If the answer says it can’t date the serial, try the other brand.

Why two rules

Amana serial number age depends on which Amana you have

An Amana serial number lookup starts with one question: is it heating and cooling, or a kitchen or laundry appliance? The Amana name sits on two unrelated product lines. Amana heating and cooling equipment is built by Goodman, a Daikin company, and it uses Goodman’s date layout. Amana kitchen and laundry appliances are built by Whirlpool, and they use the Whirlpool layout.

The practical tell is the first character. In the examples we found, an Amana HVAC serial begins with digits, such as 0211847363. An Amana appliance serial begins with one or two letters, such as M41402320. That is a pattern in the sources, not a manufacturer rule, so confirm by looking at what the unit is.

If you decode the wrong one, the tool will usually say it can’t date the serial. Treat that as a signal to switch brands, not as a dead end.

  • HVAC: digits first, year then month
  • Appliances: letters first, then a year character and week
  • Wrong brand usually returns “can’t date”

Amana HVAC serial number: how it is read

The serial is on the rating plate of the furnace, air handler or outdoor unit. The first two digits are the year and the next two are the month. That is how you get Amana furnace age from the plate.

Examples from the sources: 0211847363 is November 2002. 080359478, a nine-digit serial, is March 2008. Before about 2001 the serial prints a dash after the year, such as 98-90558, and gives only the year (1998). The tool shows a year with no month for those.

The sources disagree on one detail. One reference says the month sits in digits 4 and 5 instead of 3 and 4, but its own example only makes sense with the year-then-month layout. We followed the clearer source. Amana “Blackhorse” letter codes from before about 2001 are not covered.

For the full Goodman rule, which Amana HVAC shares, see the Goodman page.

How an Amana appliance serial is read

On a refrigerator, range, dishwasher, washer or dryer, the serial is on the rating plate, usually inside the door frame or on the back. Since 2010 it is one or two plant letters, one year character (0 to 9 for 2010 to 2019, X for 2020), two digits for the week and a five-digit sequence number. A serial starting K905 is week 5 of 2019.

The same two gaps as every Whirlpool-built appliance apply. Units made before 2010 and in 2021 or later come back as “can’t date”, because the letters overlap with the older system and no reliable chart exists. Check the owner’s manual or the plate for those.

The Whirlpool page has the full year table, the X caveat and the water heater rule.

Typical life

How long Amana equipment lasts

No source gives an Amana-specific lifespan. These are the published ranges by product type.

The Department of Energy suggests considering a heat pump or air conditioner replacement past 10 years and a furnace past 15. See HVAC lifespan for the full table.

Keeping both Amanas straight in the inventory

In a mixed portfolio the same word “Amana” can show up on a furnace in the closet and a range in the kitchen. If your records only say “Amana, 2010”, nobody can tell which rule produced the year.

Record each item with its category, make, model and serial in the asset inventory. Then the unit page shows installed items by room with years of life left, and the furnace and the range each carry their own expected life.

For capital planning, the question is which year’s budget a furnace or air conditioner lands in. The Budget Projection report compares budget to spend by category, and the life left on each system tells you where to expect pressure.

  • Make, model and serial on every item
  • Expected life editable per item
  • Years of life left by category in the units table

Amana serial number questions

How do I tell the age of an Amana from its serial number?

For Amana serial number age, first decide which Amana it is. Heating and cooling serials are digits and read year then month. Appliance serials start with letters and read plant, year character, then week. Enter the serial in the matching brand above. The result is an estimate.

How do I find Amana furnace age from the serial?

Find the rating plate on the furnace, copy the serial and choose Amana (HVAC) in the tool. The first two digits are the year and the next two are the month, so 0211847363 is November 2002. Serials from before about 2001 show only the year.

Who makes Amana furnaces and air conditioners?

Goodman builds Amana-brand heating and cooling equipment, and Goodman is owned by Daikin. That is why the Amana HVAC rule matches Goodman’s layout: two digits for the year, then two for the month.

Why does the tool say it can't date my Amana appliance?

It reads Whirlpool-built appliances made from 2010 to 2020 only. Older units and units made from 2021 on use year codes the tool deliberately skips. Check the plate or the owner’s manual, or try the HVAC brand if it is a furnace.

What about older Amana HVAC with a dash in the serial?

Before about 2001 the serial prints a dash after the year, like 98-90558, and gives only the year. The tool returns that year with no month. Older Amana letter codes are not covered.

Is the decoded date reliable enough for a charge?

Use it as an estimate. Both rules come from third-party references, not from Amana, Goodman or Whirlpool. Confirm with the rating plate or the manufacturer before a date supports a resident charge.
